This book gives water to forgotten roots and introduces current consumers of food to the wealth of lives that are a part of the story on our plates and in the old rooms we may occupy. Most food history is about food and this was about historical people and what they ate. So this is very different! I liked the Civil War reporter best and his tough guy persona who was scared of tobacco juice. Tapper uses this guy and his time in Montgomery to show how Alabama life was back then, and then there's a possum on the menu at a local restaurant. I like the recipe for the possum, but no I won't be trying that! But good read though. Funny, sad, and insightful. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2021 )

Incredibly well researched, each page holds a new bit of info and I loved the inclusion of pictures and recipes, they capture the imagination and add so much depth. Also the menus, I loved seeing those too. So cool to see history through this lens which is often overlooked yet integral to us as human beings. Highly recommend to all!
